Voluntary and Community Unit

1. Group Organisation

Newry & Mourne Women Ltd facilitate the development of an inclusive group to represent the interests of women in the Newry, Mourne and South Down area by developing policy and practice which promotes equality, diversity and interdependence.

This is achieved by identifying and meeting training needs.

2. Development of local women's Groups

In keeping with our Aims and Objectives we work with women's groups and individual women in the Newry, Mourne and South Down Area. Through mapping women's activities in the area we establish and support the development of new groups on a cross-community basis in the area plus providing continuous developmental support to 23 established existing women's groups.

Through contacts with a varied range of service and education providers we organise selected activities to promote networking of all the women's groups and we also support our Member groups to access funding.

3. Influence Policy and Practice

We seek representation from a diverse range of women (guided by Section 75 and new TSN) that will influence policy and practice to bring about positive change for women.

This is achieved via the Organisation lobbying locally and regionally on issues that impact on women in collaboration with other Groups and Organisations and also on a cross-Border basis to collectively address common issues. Through co-ordinating community based education women from the area are encouraged to participate in the lobbying process through accredited training.

4. Information Provision

Our information provision consists of starting a group through personal visits, help and training on Committee structures, constitutions, funding advice and assistance on completing applications for project costs combined with ideas on how the Group can fundraise in their own area. Continuous support, development and communication to existing Groups is ensured through distributing regular newsletters, arranged planning sessions, drop in at our Centre, local media and various networking opportunities. All our advice and information is readily available to individual women and groups, many of whom progress to enrolling on courses and join in all social events. We also provide a signposting service which may require specialist guidance eg Women's Aid, Careers Advice, Welfare Rights and Volunteer Centre.

5. To create a Culture which promotes Health and Social Well-being

In partnership with others, to target social need and build the capacity of women through sourcing and providing training which will promote health and wellbeing amongst women throughout the Newry & Mourne area both individually and collaboratively to address their own health needs in ways that they feel are relevant. Through providing themed events/activities in keeping with our policies and practice which support and encourage networking between women will address the social/rural isolation that many women experience and support our Member Groups to do likewise.
